The low end screw is on he right side of the carb (when seated facing forward). My brass plug was partially covered with a light spot of white paint. Following posts much farhter down in this site, I took off the seat and tank, removed the white spacer and reassembled. I went after the low end screw without first testing with spacer out only (kinda dumb rookie thinking). Be careful removing that plug or you will drill into the screw itself. Follow the posts below in this site. Basically, you dial out the screw and make a partially offsetting adjustment with the idle screw on the other side. I had the same issues as you. After this mod, most, but not all of my backfires went away. I have tried Polar Pilot's suggestion, and could not make it work effectivly with the Jardine at the altitude I'm at (close to sea level. Happy tinkering - it's really not that big a deal and is totally reversible if you don't like the result.
